Fleet of 75 vehicles transitioning from ICE to EV & PHEV
Challenges and Objectives
The Government Agency embarked on a mission to reduce overall departmental emissions by 56% and meet the government commitment of having 25% ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEV) by December 31, 2022. Additionally, their goal was to achieve 100% zero emissions at the tailpipe for their entire car and van fleet by December 31, 2027. To accomplish this, the Agency has to transition its fleet of 75 ICE vehicles to EVs. One of the major challenges faced by the Agency was the absence of on-site EV charging facilities. As a result, staff members had to rely on off-site commercial facilities for charging, which proved to be financially unsustainable and caused productivity losses due to time spent away from work. Furthermore, the Agency lacked experience in handling TVs, EV chargers, and the installation of electricity infrastructure in remote areas of their site.
smartDCS Solution
To address these challenges, the Agency approached various EV charge point installation providers. However, the proposed solutions did not meet the expected charging requirements, particularly for long overnight charging. Additionally, these proposals would have been excessively expensive to install, resulted in high current draw for short periods of time, and accelerated the degradation of the fleets EV batteries. smartDCS, equipped with expertise in designing and installing EV charging systems, as well as experience working on secure sites, stepped in to provide a tailored solution. As part of the design process smartDCS offered (and provided) an access control solution for the charging points to fulfil a previously unrecognised requirement. Their comprehensive knowledge and skills enabled them to deliver a cost-effective EV charging installation that met the Agency's requirements.
Results
Eight chargers were strategically installed to ensure seamless support for the increasing number of electric vehicles. The chosen chargers provide efficient and rapid charging for the fleet. The charging solution implemented offers expandability and upgradeability features, allowing for easy scalability as the fleet expands further. This flexibility ensures that future growth and increased charging demands can be accommodated without the need for extensive modifications or replacements. One of the primary advantages of this charging infrastructure is the ability to significantly reduce on going charging costs. By leveraging the available charging power efficiently, the Government Agency can minimise electricity consumption and associated expenses. This cost-effective approach makes the solution highly attractive for organisations seeking sustainable and budget-conscious charging options.
Conclusion
By partnering with smartDCS, the UK Government Agency successfully resolved the challenges associated with transitioning their fleet from ICE vehicles to EVs. The implementation of on-site EV charging points not only eliminated the need for off-site charging but also contributed to the Agency's commitment to reduce emissions and meet sustainability targets. smartDCS's expertise in EV charging technologies and their ability to work within specific security constraints played a crucial role in delivering a stylish and high performing EV charging installation within the allocated budget.
